The new qualifying system of 2005 certainly made for an extraordinary qualifying session in Melbourne. The weather dealt Giancarlo an ace card, resulting in the young Italian claiming provisional pole. Sunday saw him qualify in the top slot with a joint time of 3:01.460 seconds, some three seconds clear of his nearest rival.
